According to a dispatch following the cabinet meeting on October 3, the Kenyan government claims that it reversed the GMO ban after taking into account things like the Kenya National Biosafety Authority's (NBA) guidelines, the need to adapt to climate change and a reduction in reliance on rain-fed agriculture. The Kenyan government repealed a ban on the commercialization of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton, a GM cotton type resistant to the destructive insect pest known as the African bollworm, during the same cabinet meeting. Following the lifting of the prohibition, President William Ruto tweeted: "We are implementing innovative and new farming solutions that will assure early maturity and higher food production to protect millions of Kenyans from recurrent starvation." Details emerged earlier of how cunning officials at the Ministry of Sports mysteriously smuggled 32  joyriders to the United States on Friday last week. The ministry’s action happened at the expense of athletes picked to represent the country at the World Athletics Championships among them, Ferdinand Omanyala who only left some hours to the event.

“The reason why the ministry officials included Omanyala and Tuwei in the last batch was meant to hoodwink embassy officials since they knew the star sprinter and the federation President could not be left out,” the source explained. Other members stranded in Nairobi were team manager Rono Bunei, physiotherapists John Muraya, Jessica Shiraku and Japheth Kariakim and team doctor Victor Bargoria. 

It is alleged that the Sports Ministry included 32 other individuals to attend the sports event, having parted with KSh 2 million. 

The scandal is not new as a similar one hit the country during the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. In the Rio scandal, Government officials stole air tickets and sold them to non-athletes, forcing them to seek alternative means to travel to the Brazillian city ( People Daily).

DCI Kinoti expressed disappointment, stating that they are investigating the inclusion of joyriders to the ministry's technical officers and coaches by Athletics Kenya (AK). He said: “It is really shocking. This is a shame not to the country but to the whole world. We shall not accept."
